Recovery after penile implant surgery is predictable, and knowing the timeline in advance makes it far less daunting. Here is what each stage looks like — though your surgeon’s specific advice always comes first.

The first 48 hours

You will usually be in hospital or staying nearby. Swelling and bruising around the scrotum and penis are expected, and pain is managed with medication. The device is left deflated. Antibiotics are given to protect against infection, which is the main thing everyone is guarding against at this stage.

Weeks 1–2

Most of the swelling settles over the first fortnight. You should stick to light activity only — no heavy lifting, no strenuous exercise. Many men are comfortable returning to a desk job by around two weeks. Keep the wound clean and finish the full course of antibiotics.

Weeks 3–4

At a follow-up appointment, your surgeon will usually show you how to inflate and deflate the device — though you are not yet cleared to use it fully. This is when the practical reality of living with the implant starts to make sense.

Weeks 4–6

Once you have healed, most men are cleared to resume sexual activity and to use the implant normally. From here it becomes part of everyday life, and the reliability that made you choose it starts to show.

Recovering abroad
